Choosing an eternity ring is a joyous occasion where you and your partner want to declare everlasting love for one another. The beauty of the eternity ring is that there are no rules on when you can give an eternity ring; it may be your first wedding anniversary or twentieth, an eternity ring could symbolise a landmark in a relationship such as the birth of a baby, the end of a troubled time or just because you want to express eternal love.

Traditionally the eternity ring is set with Diamonds, however you may choose another stone to accompany or in place of Diamonds such as Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds or Amethyst. Diamonds are one of the hardest known materials and are valued according to their colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. The next hardest gemstone would be Ruby famous for their deep red colour, a beautiful symbol for love and of course the 40th wedding anniversary. Sapphire, another precious gemstone add a lovely contrast to Diamonds with rich blue shades (not to be confused with Sapphire Quartz which is another name for blue chalcedony). Emeralds are green in colour and traditionally represent friendship, watch out for synthetic Emeralds that are hard to distinguish from real Emeralds. Amethyst is a common gemstone and usually purple or lavender in colour, as with Emeralds watch out for the synthetic Amethysts which are difficult to distinguish from the true Amethyst.

You may want to coordinate the colour of your eternity ring with the colour of your engagement and wedding rings if they are to be worn on the same finger. If you intend to wear your eternity ring on it's own on the other hand or in place of your engagement and/or wedding ring you could choose a completely different colour. There are no rules as to which finger or hand you should wear your eternity, just consider which finger you feel most comfortable with.
